The area of Patima I within the Municipality of Halandri constitutes a typical case of
urban development of the recent years in the region of Attica, where construction
activity has been particularly heavy. Construction followed a fast pace that did not
match the usually slow development of the necessary public spaces nor was it well
combined with whatever minimum and limited free spaces were provided by the
town plan.
This led to a plethora of private villas and luxurious homes built in an area with
narrow streets, surrounded by small and disperse public spaces that are usually left
unexploited and in bad shape.
The present paper attempts to propose a design for selected public spaces in the
Patima I area of the Municipality of Halandri, aiming at providing an integrated
aesthetic and functional approach for each space separately.
The history of the area and the role of its natural extension, the Penteli mountain,
are integrated within the design proposal and put to good use. Moreover, the church
of Aghios Antonios that constitutes a central element in the development of the
area, plays, in the specific proposal, the part of a hub and is brought in the lime light
as an area of worship and as an element of space planning. The church is further
promoted as a connecting link with the surrounding respective public spaces.
The present paper places special emphasis both on the use of the plant material, the
selection of the species as well as their maintenance needs. Furthermore, with
regard to hard materials, sustainable and environmental friendly materials are
proposed.
Finally, the spaces to be designed are not supposed to form separate shaped pieces
of land but nuclei of a broader design, linked by means of pedestrian streets and
cycle routes, aiming at connecting them to the greater green areas such as the
Penteli mountain.
